Ostrava Days. Petr Bakla: Summer Work (world premiere)

The fifth day of the Ostrava Days presented a concert of the festival’s residential orchestra Ostravská banda held at the Triple Hall Karolina. Led by four different conductors – Petr Kotík, Joseph Trafton, Bruno Ferrandis and Carl Bettendorf – the ensemble played a program consisting of nine compositions, none of which was more than 15 years old.

One of them was Petr Bakla’s Summer Work which received its world premiere. It was written in 2016 in – like many other of the composer’s pieces – the form of diptych. The program also included pieces by Roscoe Mitchell, Christian Wolff, Klaus Lang, George Lewis, Marc Sabat and Richard Ayres as well two residents of the Ostrava Days 2017 Institute Ben Richter and Matouš Hejl. The evening was closed by an improvisation by members of the Chicago-based AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians).
