Magdeburg: Rusalka

Theater Magdeburg in the capital city of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, put on Dvořák’s Rusalka as the first premiere of this year’s season. The production’s author is an experienced British opera director Stephen Lawless, who has collaborated with MET, Berlin State Opera or Royal Opera House Covent Garden, among others.

His Rusalka is not a fairy tale, but a harsh “coming of age” story, emphasizing the disillusionment after the brutal encounter with reality and alienation between the central couple. Starring a permanent member of the Magdeburg ensemble Raffaela Lintl as Rusalka and American tenor Richard Furman as Prince, the cast also includes Izabela Matula (Foreign Princess), Johannes Stermann (Water Goblin) or Undine Dreiβig (Witch). Rusalka is sung in Czech with German subtitles and conducted by the theatre’s music director Pawel Poplawski. Following the 9 September premiere, it will receive seven more performances before 2018.
