International Markku Johansson competition in composition and arrangement

THIS UNIQUE COMPETITION IS APPROACHING THE HOME STRETCH

Launched by the Vantaa Pops Orchestra last autumn, the Markku Johansson competition in composition and arrangement will close in four months.  Compositions and arrangements for the full symphony orchestra may be lodged until 15 June 2018.  This competition is unique even by international standards, and the expectations are high.

This international competition is open to everyone, and it will be judged by Jaakko Kuusisto (conductor and the chair of the jury), Hans Ek(conductor, Sweden), Antti Rissanen (renowned trombone player and a big band professional) as well as Markku Johansson, the honorary conductor of the Vantaa Pops Orchestra.

The finalists chosen by the jury will be performed in the final concert, conducted by Nick Davies, on 17 September 2018 in the home town of the Orchestra.  The jury will also decide on how the prize money of 18 000 euros is divided between the two categories and the entries within them.

”The aim of this competition is to find new, high quality and recognisable light music for the full symphony orchestra, of the kind which orchestras around the world would like to include in their repertoire”, says Markku Johansson.

Summer composition course in Croatia 2019
Skladatelské
UPBEAT International Summer Music School in the town of Milna on the beautiful Adriatic island of Brac in Croatia. The dates of the course are Thursday 18 July through Monday 29 July, 2019. The deadline for receipt of all materials is Friday, 22 February, 2019.

The UPBEAT International Summer Music School website is:
http://www.upbeat.hr
Milna is a beautiful village on the island of Brac. It is reachable by a one-hour ferry ride from the historic Dalmatian port city of Split. Here are a few pictures of Milna:
http://www.find-croatia.com/brac/
and more are to be found on the “gallery” page of my website, http://joelhoffman.net

The composition course is designed primarily for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and young professionals, but is open to composer-performers of all ages.

The course consists of:

(1) a series of daily group meetings with Professor Joel Hoffman
(2) cultural and outdoor group activities in Milna and nearby on the island of Brac
(3) a final concert of works by course participants. The course will focus on works written for the composer-performers who are the members of the course.

The daily morning group meetings consist of the following:
(1) Composition Practicum: Writing for the composers’ ensemble
This is the main part of the course, in which students will have composed complete pieces in advance of the course for either the entire ensemble or some part of it. The pieces will be rehearsed and evaluated in depth in a group setting by Professor Hoffman as well as by other professors in residence in terms of compositional craft and idiomatic writing for the ensemble. There will be ample time for revision and refinement of the compositions, which will then be performed by the ensemble in the final concerts on 28 and 29 July in Milna.

(2) Improvisation Workshop
A number of principles of improvisation will be introduced and demonstrated, along with daily group exercises and structured improvisation events. This part of the composition course is also open to other music students taking part in the “UPBEAT” International Summer Music School.

(3) Presentations of work and discussions
Participants will give presentations of their music and in addition, there will be a number of organized discussions around topics of vital interest to composers and composer-performers.

Afternoons/evenings are devoted to rehearsals, practice time, composing time and outdoor activities in and near Milna.

The presence of several other UPBEAT courses taking place concurrently with the composition course will give participants the opportunity to meet many talented young musicians from around the world. Many of these musicians will be performing in their own courses's final concerts which take place every few days throughout the summer. Professors of other courses are on the faculties of institutions such as the Moscow Conservatory, the Helsinki Conservatory, The Hochschule für Musik“Hanns Eisler” of Berlin, The Trinity Laban Conservatory in London and many others.

What to submit?
Interested composers must send the following materials to Professor Hoffman by Friday, 22 February, 2019:

1. a resume. In the resume, please make sure the following information is included:
  - composition experience, including works composed with year of composition
  - list of performances of your works
  - universities/conservatories attended with dates of degrees earned as composer
  - names of composition teachers
  - performance level on your instrument (e.g. intermediate, advanced, professional)
  - list of repertoire performed on your instrument
  - list of performances and any awards/competitions won
  - names of instrumental/vocal teachers
  - universities/conservatories/music schools attended with dates of degrees earned as instrumentalist/vocalist (if applicable)

2. date of birth, citizenship, mailing address, email address and phone number

3. a score of one original work for a small ensemble scored for 2-15 separate parts. A live (preferred) or MIDI recording of this ensemble piece is strongly encouraged but not required.

4. a recording of two contrasting pieces in which you perform. The pieces may be either solos or ensemble pieces but in the case of the latter, it should be easy to individuate your playing from among the others in the ensemble (i.e. If you are a violinist, please do notsubmit a work for three violins!). Please make sure you include information as to the work performed, duration of pieces and when/where the recording was made. Recordings may be either audio or video (preferred).

5. A letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher which attests to your experience and achievements as both composer and performer.  Please ask your recommender to send his/her letter directly to Professor Hoffman at joel.hoffman@uc.edu.

Please submit your materials in the following way:
Send items 1 and 2 to Professor Hoffman by email at joel.hoffman@uc.edu.
Send items 3 and 4 as links via an internet delivery service such asyousendit.comordropbox.comorsoundcloud.com, and make sure that you advise Professor Hoffman by email where and how your materials are available online. Please DO NOT send items 3 and 4 by email.
Send item 5 as described above.

The principal language of the UPBEAT International Music Summer School is English. In addition, Professor Hoffman can accommodate students in Italian and French.

Timetable:
Once again: the deadline for receipt of all materials is Friday, 22 February, 2019.

Participants accepted into the course will be notified by email no later than 8 March, 2019.

By no later than 15 March, 2019, accepted participants will be asked to confirm their participation in the course by paying a deposit of 150 euros or USD$170 via PayPal, sent to Professor Hoffman via joel.hoffman@uc.edu.

On 17 March, confirmed participants will be informed of the available instrumentation for the course, and will be asked to compose a piece (maximum of seven minutes’ duration) for a specific combination of instruments/voice drawn from from the complete ensemble. At that time, confirmed participants will be given the opportunity to request a specific instrumentation from among the performing forces available. Those requests will be honored to the greatest extent possible. Works involving electronics are very welcome but all equipment will have to be supplied by the composer.

By 24 May, new works to be performed on the final concerts will be completed. It is required that the participants' compositions will be completed well before the course begins so that the focus during the course can be on revising and refining. Scores and parts should be sent to Professor Hoffman viayousendit.com(or a similar service) no later than Friday, 24 May, 2019, and copies of these should be emailed directly to the new work's performers at that time to allow sufficient time for individual preparation. It is hoped that the composers will also work on new pieces for the ensemble during the course, which can be rehearsed and discussed along with the previously completed pieces.

By 31 May, the remainder of the course tuition - 600 euros - will be due (150 + 450 = 600 euros total tuition), and will be payable to the UPBEAT International Summer Music School. Instructions for payment of the course tuition will be available on the UPBEAT website. NOTE: Your deposit of 150 euros ($170) is not due UNTIL and UNLESS you are accepted into the course. There is no application fee to apply to the program.
Please email me with any questions.

Atelier for Young Festival Managers - Valletta, Malta, 23-29 March 2019
The Festival Academy (an initiative of the European Festivals Association - EFA), calls for applications for the 15th edition of the Atelier for Young Festival Managers, to take place from 23 to 29 March 2019 in Valletta, Malta, organised in partnership with Festivals Malta.

Up to 35 selected participants from across the globe will have the chance to broaden their programming skills, widen their horizons and develop new project ideas under the professional guidance of renowned festival managers from all over the world who share their rich experience and guide participants throughout the 7 days.

Emerging festival managers or those who have ambitions to get involved in programming in festivals are invited to apply for this unique 7 day programme by 16 July 2018.

The Atelier starts from the very essence of festival management – the arts, the artist and the audience - and focuses on the topics and issues raised by the participants which are further developed and elaborated during the Atelier. These topics will be examined in panel discussions, but also in small working groups, thematic lunches and cross-discipline round tables. There is also space for more informal one-to-one talks during meals and cultural visits. The sharing of experiences on an equal footing and networking are key. The Atelier aims for diversity on all levels, in its participants (geographically, art disciplines, etc.), its mentors and its programme. Participants will have the chance to compare their views with colleagues from various cultural and professional backgrounds and analyse them in view of the local context of Valletta and Malta.

For the next generation of festival managers the Atelier represents an extraordinary occasion to imagine innovative, pioneering, and creative projects and festival formulae and to expand their network.

Forty-four fully funded residencies are available between May and December, and range in duration from two to four weeks. This multidisciplinary program is open to composers and sound artists looking to enrich their practice in a collegial, retreat-like setting—in the company of artists working in visual arts, creative writing, moving image and architecture/landscape design.

This residency is suitable for individuals focused on concert music (all genres), sound sculpture, architectural and theatrical sound design, media scoring and instrument design. While the typical residency revolves around studio work, those wishing to create mixed-media pieces or sound installations within I-Park’s natural and built environments are encouraged to do so.

Located within a 450-acre nature preserve in rural East Haddam, Connecticut (U.S.), I-Park provides residents with private living quarters in a renovated 1840s farmhouse, a private studio, meals program, fully-equipped workshop and modest library—as well as creative access to I-Park’s expansive grounds. Residencies are self-directed, undisturbed and non-judgmental. You decide what you’re working on and when.

Its music studios are equipped with pianos, digital keyboards/controllers, a collection of percussion and obscure instruments, and hardware for recording, sequencing and sound manipulation.

Call for young composers: Composer's Kitchen 2018

Quatuor Bozzini is proud to announce the renewal of its partnership with Gaudeamus Muziekweek (Netherlands) for its Composer’s Kitchen 2018 professional residency, which takes place April 23-28 (Montreal) and September 3-7 (Utrecht, Netherlands). This year, Yannis Kyriakides will be the mentor composer for the participants throughout the two-phase residency.

“Dare to do what you’ve never dared before!”

Each edition of the Composer’s Kitchen is a chance to rigorously work in a creative, noncompetitive and relaxed atmosphere. Participants are encouraged to experiment beyond the limits of convention and to explore new and varied aesthetic styles in a way that their mastery in string quartet writing is strengthened to its highest degree during this enriching experience.

Details about the residency
Composer’s Kitchen is a professional residency produced by Quatuor Bozzini since 2005 whose aim is to train emerging composers in string quartet writing. This unique event is like an “incubator” for original works, combining workshop, laboratory, playground, and masterclass. The new compositions are read, played, assessed, analysed, worked on, played again and performed in a final concert. The residency occurs over two phases: in the first phase, a week-long workshop occurs in Montreal (Canada); six months later, all the artists reunite in the Composer’s Kitchen second phase which takes place in partnership with an international organization (in the past: Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Sound and Music/Sound Scotland.) Quatuor Bozzini and the participants refresh and review in detail the pieces which have matured over the last number of months. Throughout the process, the composers will be supported by – other than Quatuor Bozzini – the presence of experienced mentors who are amongst the most important figures in new music creation.
